Who We Are

Heaston Church is an independent, non-denominational church. This means that while we do not belong to any denomination or formal organization (not that we are opposed to such organizations), we are accountable to Christ as the Head of the Church (Eph 1:20-23; Col 1:18), and to the people of God as members of His body (1 Corinthians 12). This does not mean that we exercise free reign, but that our leadership humbly submits themselves under Christ's leadership, searching the Scripture for wisdom and guidance, and depending on the Spirit in prayer as we entrust to Jesus the people He has entrusted to us.

What We Believe

We believe in, and stand firm on, the Gospel of God's grace demonstrated through Jesus' death on the cross for our sin, and His resurrection from the dead for our new life. We believe that the Gospel impacts every arena of our lives as people and that we must continue to apply it to our daily living.

The Bad News

Whether we care to admit it or not, things are not as they should be. We are not as we should be. If you have ever found yourself desiring more in life, wondering if there is something bigger than you, something that gives you meaning apart from a job, a relationship, achievements, pleasure, or anything else you may have experienced, it is because you were created and designed for more by Someone bigger than you!

God designed us to be in a relationship with Him. We were created to be known by Him and to know Him, but this relationship was severed when the first people, Adam and Eve, turned their affections from God to themselves. They SINNED and as a result. all people since have been born with a corrupted nature, not focusing our affection toward God, but toward ourselves.

It's not just that we do things that are contrary to God, but we ourselves are contrary to God by our very nature. Sin has corrupted us all, and as a result, all people are under the wrath of a holy God (Rom 3:23; Rom 6:23; Rom 5:12-21). This is BAD NEWS because sin separates us from being in that relationship with God. We are now lost and dead in our spiritually (Eph 2:1-3). We all have need to be made alive, to be given new life, but we can't do anything as sin corrupted people to gain that life. We are without hope on our own...

The Good News

There is GOOD NEWS, though. Our loving God is not content to leave us in that hopeless position. Knowing that we could not do anything to regain our relationship with Him, He did something. God loves us and wants us to be reconciled in our relationship to Him, so he entered His creation to do something about it! Jesus came to point us back to God and to take on the punishment of God's wrath for our sin so that we would not have to (Rom 5:8; 2 Cor 5:21)!

Because of what God did through Jesus' death on the cross and his being raised from the dead, you now have the opportunity to get a new life and be reconciled to God! You don't have to perform - you can't. You don't have to clean up your life first - you can't. God asks us to TRUST what He has done through Christ. He asks us to BELIEVE that Jesus' death paid for our punishment and that his resurrection gives us new life. That's it! It is FAITH. TRUST, BELIEVE, FAITH - they all mean the same. God did what we could not. That is all that is needed to make things right. It is like receiving a gift from someone. You simply accept the gift. You trust that what God said He did is true (John 3:16; Eph 2:8-9).

If you believe this, then God makes you alive spiritually! There is no set way to do this. It is an inward thing. You can do it quietly in your heart or out loud. You can do it right now! Here is a sample prayer that you might consider praying to God to express the inward belief in Jesus:

Loving God, I have become aware of my sin and separation from you. I realize that I need you. I know there is nothing I can do to earn your love or to fix our relationship on my own. I know that you sent Jesus to take the punishment and wrath that I deserve and because of His death in my place and His resurrection, I have that opportunity. I trust that Jesus' death and resurrection are what I need to be made alive and to be reconciled to you. Thank you for loving me so much in allowing Jesus to die for me. Amen.

  • The Holy Scriptures

      We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man, and the divine and final authority for Christian faith and practice. (2 Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:21; 1 Cor 2:13; Matt 24:35; Heb 4:12; Rev 22:18-19)

  • The Godhead

      We believe there is one, only one, living and true God, subsisting in three persons called the Trinity—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, each having precisely the same nature and attributes, and worthy of precisely the same homage, confidence, and obedience. (Gen 1:26; Matt 28:19; Mark 12:29; John 1:14; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Cor 13:14; Heb 1:1-3)

  • God the Father

      We believe in God the Father, all-present, perfect in holiness, infinite in wisdom, measureless in power; who created the universe by His spoken word and concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men. He hears and answers prayer and gives eternal life to all who come to Him through personal faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. (Gen 1:1; 1 Chron 29:11-12; Psa 33:6-22; Jer 33:3; John 1:12)

  • Jesus Christ

      We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became fully man without ceasing to be fully God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born in human form through the miracle of the virgin birth. His sinless life made Him the only worthy sacrifice to take away the penalty of our sin by shedding His blood and dying in our place on the cross. We believe in His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the Father, and His bodily, imminent return to the earth according to His promise in the Scriptures. (John 1:1, 14, 18; Luke 1:26-38; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Thess 4:16-17; Rev 20:4-6; John 14:6)

  • The Holy Spirit

      We believe that the person of the Holy Spirit came from God to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. It is He who gives new birth to those who trust Christ. He baptizes them into the Church, the Body of Christ; indwells them permanently; and seals them unto the day of redemption. He ministers to the Body of Christ as its comforter, counselor, and guide. He bestows spiritual gifts upon each person as He wills, and empowers them for service. (John 15:26-27, 16:7-15, 14:16-17; Eph 1:13, 4:30; 1 Cor 12:13; Eph 5:18; Acts 4:31)

  • Man

      We believe that all men by nature and by choice are sinners and are condemned to die, deserving the eternal wrath of God. But God in His mercy and perfect love sent His only Son into the world to bear that wrath on our behalf, so that whoever places his trust and faith in Jesus Christ alone not only escapes the penalty of sin, but is given full rights and privileges as God’s child. (John 1:12; Rom 3:23, 5:8, 12, 6:23, 8:16-17; 1 John 3:1-2; Eph 1:5)

  • Salvation

      We believe that salvation is a gift of God, which He freely gives by His grace, and is received by man through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins. By thus trusting Him we escape the wrath of God and pass from death to life. (Eph 2:8-9; John 1:12, 3:16, 5:24; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 3:18; Rom 6:23, 10:9-10)

  • Security of Believers

      We believe that all true believers are kept secure in Christ forever. (Rom 8:1, 29-39; John 10:27-30; 1 Pet 1:3-5, 23)

  • The Christian Life

      We believe that we are called to a holy life, to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, having our minds set on things above rather than the temporal things of this world. Thus we are to relate to the world as strangers and pilgrims, ambassadors of Christ and His witnesses, having as our primary purpose in life to make Christ known to the whole world, starting at home. We are to relate to one another in love according to the command of Christ that all men will know that we are His disciples. (1 Pet 1:14-16, 22; Rom 8:5-8, 6:11-14, 12:10-21; Gal 5:16; 1 Pet 2:11; 2 Cor 5:20; Acts 1:8; Matt 28:19-20; John 13:34-35).

  • Sexuality

      We believe sex is a gift from God to be enjoyed within the marriage relationship. We believe that God has commanded abstinence from any form of sexual/intimate activity outside of a marriage between one man and one woman, or any other distortion of God’s intent and design for sex. Though the Bible condemns sexual sin, it is not unforgivable sin. The same redemption is available to all sinners. (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:24-25; 1 Corinthians 6:15-20; 7:1-40; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; Romans 5:8)

      We believe that God has created and gifted some to remain single and celibate in life. This does not diminish their value or contribution within the Church. It is a gift that should be used to further serve the Lord. (Matthew 19:10-12; 1 Corinthians 7:25-35)

      We believe that God created human beings male and female; therefore we hold the distinction between the two sexes to be sacred. Any attempt to change or alter God’s design would be sinful. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 1:18–32)

      We also believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior, attitudes, or speech directed towards any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of Heaston Church. (1 Peter 2:13-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12)

  • The Church

      We believe that the church is a living and spiritual body of which Christ is head and of which all spiritually regenerated people are members. We believe that a local church is an assembly of believers united in a common faith, practicing love, and intent on the purpose of the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ and making disciples of all nations. We believe that the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper were given to the church respectively as public testimony of personal commitment to Christ, and in remembrance of the shedding of His blood, His death, burial and resurrection to life. (Eph 1:22-23, 5:23; Col 1:18; Rom 12:4-5; Philippians 1:27; 1 Cor 11:23-26; Matt 28:19; Col 1:12)
